I was treated to a good laugh today thanks to the cutting wit of my short, cute, sweet-looking co-worker (I'm sure this is why she gets away with it) and a certain not so quick-witted personal trainer who lacks a good deal in the humour department (though he thinks he's quite funny).
Apparently said co-worker was walking into the centre today and he held the door open for her while they exchanged polite pleasantries. She, who rarely misses an opportunity to make a jab at someone, continued the conversation by saying "wow, have you been tanning? You've really got the Malibu Ken look going on there.." "Biff" (we'll call him Biff though that's another story entirely) looked pretty pleased with himself and replied 'You think? Well, I've got a competition in a week' and went on his merry way obviously thinking She was complementing him. She wasn't. She's not hard to read. If you are bothering to pay attention...
I got to hear about this exchange later; complete with the description of "he looked a lot leaner than normal - he was like an anatomy drawing". Yes, fat is detrimental to muscle definition, and a tan certainly enhances it. I don't understand the bleaching of the hair though. It makes him look sort of like a reverse of his normal self - light skin, darker hair to light hair dark skin. Mind you, I'd certainly say blond suits him in some respects...
Normally I wouldn't be so harsh on someone's choice of past-time/passion. In all honesty I started out respecting him. We once had a discussion about body-building because I said I understood how he could want to sculpt his body into the most perfect form possible for him. Don't I want to do the essentially the same thing when I dance? I practice in order to attempt to obtain perfection in movement. Not so different. He went on to say that people have a poor opinion of body-builders and he hopes that he doesn't portray himself in a way that encourages that stereotype. He preaches whole natural foods, and organics, and hard work and intelligent training choices, and no drugs. Unfortunately, he's a hypocrite. Actually, you could probably call him an outright liar.
If he created the body he has solely by nutrition choices and physical training in the gym then I would still respect him. But he didn't. So I don't. Can't.
It's a shame that he's not real. Body-building could use a representative that honestly adheres to the principles he preaches.
Body by Nautilus; brain (unfortunately) by Mattel...
